Subject: The Application of Color Theory in the Garden
Speaker: Jennifer Bakshi
Due to the ever changing patterns of plant growth and bloom, a multifaceted approach to color design must be used to plan a garden. This program will attempt to give both an outline of color theory and general guidelines for season-sensitive color planning. Jennifer Bakshi is a certified Landscape Designer and Horticulturalist, and a Master Gardener. She teaches at the New York Botanical Garden and has lectured at the American Horticultural Society. A passionate gardener, she is the owner of Urban Oasis Landscape Design, LLC. Her home gardens are a showcase for her work and have been featured in the Open Days Tour of the Garden Conservancy and the annual Roses to Rock Gardens Tour sponsored by the Friends of the Van Vleck House and Garden.

Subject: Viticulture in New Jersey, with a wine tasting
Speaker: Gary Pavlis
Have you ever wondered where and how wine is produced in the Garden State? Dr. Gary Pavlis is a professor and agricultural agent at Rutgers University. He works as a wine consultant in the USA, South Africa and China and has conducted classes on all aspects of grape horticulture and wine tasting. An authority on the intricacies of growing grapes in N.J., he will bring along a selection of wines for us to sample and savor.

Speaker: Joseph G. Lelinho
A beekeeper and the owner of Hilltop Honey of North Caldwell, he manages over 40 colonies of honeybees. His commercial and residential colonies are spread throughout New Jersey. Joe has been featured in the Star Ledger, the New York Times, the Caldwell Progress, in various magazines and on television. He is president of the Essex County Beekeepers Society. Come meet Joe Lelinho and learn about honeybees in New Jersey.

Speaker: Michele Caron
An award-winning AIFD Master Designer, Michelle Caron has an extensive background in floral exhibits and design. Her work has been published in many magazines and she has appeared on the Martha Stewart and Wendy Williams shows. Come meet Michelle: she will show us how to create wonderful winter and holiday floral designs.

Subject: Understanding White Grubs in Turf Grass
Speaker: Richard Buckley
Richard Buckley is Director of the Rutgers Plant Diagnostic Laboratory and an instructor in the Professional Golf Turf Management School at Rutgers. He teaches courses in diseases and insect pests of turf grass and ornamental plants. He is also a frequent lecturer on diseases and insect pests in turf and ornamentals, plant problem solving and pest management techniques. Meet the expert and find out what those white grubs are really doing in your lawn.

Speaker: Wanda Knaptik
Ms. Knaptik, a horticultural specialist, lecturer and educator, recently featured in the Star Ledger, will provide a program on planning, installing and maintaining backyard organic vegetable and herb gardens. Consistent with the food gardening resurgence, she will provide advice on the what, where, when and how of organic gardening.

Speaker: David Culp
David Culp, of Brandywine Cottage, says Hellebores are the “specialty of the house.” He has been collecting and breeding these wonderful plants for many decades. For the past 14 years, he has traveled to personally hand-select parent plants from the world’s best breeders. Mr. Culp is THE expert on Hellebores and has written and lectured throughout the U.S. on this genus. Enjoy this wonderful speaker, and you’ll want Hellebores in your garden too.

Subject: Water Gardens
Speaker: Kenneth A. Pettis
Kenneth Pettis, Maplewood’s former Township Committee Chairperson, has been the organizer and director of the Maplewood/South Orange Pond Tour for the past six years. Twenty-six ponds in the two towns, Millburn and Short Hills have been exhibited. Ken will guide us through the planning, planting, care, fertilization, watering, and pest control problems associated with establishing a water garden on one’s own property. He will also cover the ecosystem that may arise around the pond, including dragonflies, tadpoles, frogs, turtles and birds.

Subject: Vision and Progress at the Greenwood Estate Gardens
Speaker: Louis Bauer
Greenwood Gardens is a century-old estate garden of 28 acres in Short Hills. The European-inspired gardens, ponds, meadows and wooded glens were replanted once in the fifties, and are being renovated again. Louis Bauer, Director of Horticulture at Greenwood Gardens, will present the vision and progress being made in updating the property to become a public garden dedicated to conservation and horticulture.
